The Abia State Government has reassured residents of their safety during the upcoming yuletide season, with a vow that it “would not yield any part of Abia State to criminals elements.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, stated this while briefing Journalists on the outcomes of this week’s State Executive Council Meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
“The present administration will continue to take the security of lives and property in Abia very seriously.
“Also, as the Yuletide season approaches the State Government wishes to assure citizens that it will stop at nothing to ensure that lives and property are protected”, he said.
Prince Kanu who emphasized that the present administration prioritizes the security of lives and property, highlighted the recently launched Security Operation, codenamed “Udo Ka”, by the Nigerian Army, as a critical step towards enhancing peace and security across the state.
“This means that in the days and weeks ahead, the Security Agencies will be very visible around the state.
“We are assuring the people of Abia that the security agents are out there for their own good and security.,
“All the Government requires from the citizens is to cooperate with them and offer necessary information about security breaches, and movement of suspected criminals in the state”, Kanu said.
On Health, the Commissioner announced a ban on Free Medical Missions without prior government approval, explaining that the measure aims to prevent potential risks associated with unregulated medical outreaches.
On Housing, the Commissioner said that the State Government has evolved a programme known as Public Buildings Initiative, specifically for rehabilitation of dilapidated public buildings.
He said that the initiative would be a continuous exercise up until every abandoned public building in Abia wears a new look and becomes functional.
“We are aware that there are lots of abandoned public buildings around the state.
“There is a deliberate government policy to renovate and retrofit all those buildings and that started with the banquet hall within the Government House premises,”Kanu said.
Prince Okey Kanu disclosed that starting from Tuesday, November 26th, the State Government would commission the reconstructed Dozie Way in Umuahia and reopen the newly renovated and retrofitted Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat in Umuahia.
The Information Commissioner also disclosed that the Governor would on Thursday this week commission Obiorah road, Cemetary road phase two and Abak street ,Aba ,in addition to the planned flag off of Onuimo bridge to Tower of Peace Umuahia, the flag off of Umuopara Ring road Umuahia south, the Flag off of the construction of Onuinyang Okporoenyi -Obuoro – Ikwuano road sections 1 and 2 on the 3rd of December,2024.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Chaka Chukwumereije, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Njoku Ukoha Njoku and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Macdonald Uba were present during the briefing.
