Abia State Government and the Organized Labour have reached an amicable agreement regarding the payment of the New Minimum Wage.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Exco meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu disclosed that the resolution followed a series of intensive meetings between the two parties over the weekend.
The Commissioner while noting that salaries are often disbursed on the 28th of each month, said a slight delay may occur due to the timing of the negotiations, which ended early today.
He however assured workers that the payment of the New Minimum Wage would “still happen in this month of October”, as promised by the Governor.
“It might be a bit difficult to commence today, you know that 28th of every month have been set aside for the payment of salaries across board but because this negotiations ended in the early hours of today, that payment of 28th may not be met.
“But be rest assured that those payments would be made before the end of the month as promised by the state Governor”, Prince Kanu assured
Prince Kanu also emphasized that the ABSIEC organized local government election would hold as scheduled on the 2nd of November 2024 across the 17 LGAs of the state.
He said that the state government in an effort to ensure active participation, has declared a half workday on the Friday preceding the elections to enable workers travel to their hometowns and communities.
“As part of events to ensure a hitch free elections, Friday preceding the elections, work will end by 12noon in the afternoon to enable workers travel to their villages, communities to participate fully in the elections.
“There will also be restriction of movement during the elections but details of such restrictions will be announced in due course”, the Commissioner hinted.
Prince Kanu disclosed that Governor Otti will officially reopen for use, the Old Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat, within the next two weeks following it’s completion, rehabilitation and retrofitting works.
“The building has been out of use for about five years now due largely to structural integrity issues.
“The completion of that building is in fulfillment of government’s agenda of rehabilitating and retrofitting public building abandoned by previous administration in the state”, Prince Kanu stated.
According to the Commissioner, the Abia state government would fully participate in the funeral ceremonies of two distinguished Igbo leaders, Dr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.
Prince Kanu disclosed that Dr Iwuanyanwu who was the immediate past President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, who would be laid to rest on November 2 in his hometown, Atta Ikeduru in Imo state while the first elected Governor of Abia State and former Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Onu would be laid to rest in Uburu, Ohaozara hometown in Ebonyi state
He said that the state government would organized an interdenominational commendation service for Dr Onu at the International Conference center on November 7 where his remains will lie in state forthe public to pay their last respects.
Speaking further on the new minimum wage, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma said that the issue of consequential adjustment was top on the agenda of meeting between Government and the Labour Union in the last 24 hours.
Mr Ekeoma assured that details of the negotiations will be made Public as soon as the negotiations have been concluded.
