As schools prepare to resume on September 16, 2024, the Abia State Government says it has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of students and teachers, with the deployment of security personnel in educational institutions across the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Exco meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the initiative which is part of the present administrations reform agenda in the education sector, is a longstanding promise by Governor Otti to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school properties across the state.
“As part of this reform agenda in the educational system, the promise that the state government has made in the past has come to fulfillment with the posting of security personnel to our schools.
“If you recall, this issue has been on the front burner for a while and posting security personnel to our schools is meant to secure the lives and properties of both the students, the teachers and the properties is the schools involved”, Prince Kanu emphasized.
The Commissioner announced series of measures taken by the Abia State Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) to enhance the state’s educational system under the ongoing Abia First Education Reform program.
He disclosed that ASUBEB is set to train 2,000 Master Trainers, adding that 200 Master Trainers have so far completed the program.
“The remaining 1,800 trainers would be trained and this is part of a wider agenda of the state government to reform our education system“Prince Kanu stated.
The Commissioner further highlighted that ASUBEB under it’s school Enhancement Team Programme, has also screened and interviewed 200 teachers while 40 teachers out of the 200 have been shortlisted for a special training preparatory to the resumption of schools later in the month.
According to Prince Kanu, ASUBEB has earmarked 5,746 staff members for promotion, a move he said, is designed to motivate the teachers so as to contribute their best to the upliftment of educational standards.
.”This is in keeping with the state government’s commitment to the welfare of our teachers and a way of motivating the teachers to contribute their quota to the upliftment of our educational system”, the Commissioner pointed out.
He highlighted the success of the ongoing online credential upload for civil servants adding that “to date, 14,262 civil servants have signed up to the platform, with 51,770 academic certificates and 35,484 service records uploaded.
Contributing, the Chairman, ASUBEB, Lady Lydia Onuoha said that the 2000 Master Trainers were selected from all 17 LGAs of the state, emphasizing that the training program is being implemented in phases to ensure comprehensive coverage and effectiveness.
She announced that the new academic session will commence on September 16th, 2024, marking the start of the first term for schools across the state.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Kenechukwu Nwosu, said the state government’s decision to deploy security personnel to schools is a direct response to the recurring incidents of vandalism and property damage, as well as a proactive measure to safeguard the lives and well-being of both students and teachers.
He added that the State Government has initiated plans to embark on a comprehensive fencing project, targeting public schools without existing fences to ensure a safer and more secure teaching and learning environment.
