The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State council has been commended for intiating to hold a cultural day in the state.
The honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture gave the commendation when the NUJ committee on the the maiden edition of Abia NUJ cultural/veteran’s day celebration paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
The commissioner stressed on the needs for all hands to be on deck to make sure that our culture which includes our language, dressing etc do not go into existention.
He assured that the ministry will give NUJ the needed support in making sure the programme becomes a success.
Nwamuo who charged newsmen to always project Abia state and Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu in good light, further thanked Abia state Governor for creating an enabling environment for journalism to thrive in the state.
Contributing the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Ugochukwu Ugwuzor expressed his joy over the decision of the NUJ to collobarate with the ministry in ensuring that our culture is sustained.
He encouraged them to always synergize with the ministry in the area of publicizing policies and programms of the ministry through there various programs on radio, television and print media.
Earlier in their desperate remarks, the chairman NUJ committee on the maiden edition of Abia NUJ cultural /veterans’ day celebration, Comrade Chukwuma Emele and the NUJ State council Chairman, Comrade Victor Ndukwe said that the union after thorough evaluation of how Culture has fared in terms of promoting and, perserving our rich cultural heritage, saw the needs to reawaken the consciousness of Igbos (ndee Abia).
They explained that if urgent measures are not taken, our languages, dressing, delicacies, dance, craft etc that give us identity, will soon go into existention.
They solicited for the ministry’s support to make sure the programme is a success.
They also informed the commissioner that the programme will hold on the 6th of December 2022 and feature award to deserving Abians and honour to our veteran journalists.
In his remark, the Director of Culture, Mrs. Folakemi Okezie, thanked the NUJ for the bold step to hold their first cultural day in the state and retirated the need for parents to do their home work by encouraging their children to speak their languages in their various homes, dress in our cultural attire which depict modesty.
