Abia Assembly Resumes Plenary; Orders State Ministry of Works to Start Palliative Work on Collapsed Ofeme Bridge

The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging its Committee on Works to liaise with the State Ministry of Works and ensure that palliative work is done on the collapsed Mbato Ofeme bridge in Umuahia North to prevent the severing of connections of the people from their kits and kin.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, who announced the resolution on the floor of the House, described the present administration in the state as one that is interested in the provision of critical infrastructure to all sections of the state, including those in the rural areas.

The resolution followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance on the collapse of the Mbato Ofeme bridge, causing difficulty to the people, brought before the House by the member representing Umuahia North State Constituency, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, praying for urgent attention to be given to the bridge to save his people from the suffering occasioned by the collapse, especially if the rains return.

The House also passed a resolution urging the State Government to assist the various Local Government Areas and empower the Abia State Road Funds Administration Board and the Abia State Rural Access Road Agency to rehabilitate more rural roads across the state.

This followed the Matter of Urgent Public Importance on the need to urgently assist the Ugwunagbo Local Government Area to rehabilitate rural roads in wards 4, 6, and 7 in Ugwunagbo State Constituency, which are currently in bad shape and need urgent attention to enhance mobility in the area and promote evacuation of farm produce, presented by the member for Ugwunagbo State Constituency, Hon. Chijioke Uruakpa.

The 8th Abia House of Assembly took the second reading of H.A.B.14: The Abia State Procedure for Disclosure of Public Information Bill, 2024, and committed it to its Committee of the Whole for further legislative action.

The House went ahead to receive the report of its Committee on Power, Public Utilities, and Water Resources on H.A.B. 23 and committed it to its Committee of the Whole while considering and adopting the report of its joint Committee of Agriculture, Trade, Commerce, and Industry on the On-the-spot Assessment of Abia Palm in Ukwa East Local Government Area, with some adjustments.

The State House of Assembly, which resumed plenary after its Christmas recess, adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday next week (4/2/2025).
