Abia Assembly moves to strengthen Homeland security

 

Abia State House of Assembly says it will do everything within the armbit of the law to assist the State government in fighting security challenges in the State.

The Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji who made this known while addressing a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing Aba South State Constituency, Hon Obinna Ichitta, on the spate of killings, kidnapping and other related criminal activities happening in the State.

Orji while condemning the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the State describing it as nefarious and alarming, has mandated the Commissioner for Homeland security to liaise with the Military, Police and DSS in the State forthwith, for a way forward and appear before it by nextweek Tuesday during plenary for hearing.

Earlier in his motion of urgent public importance, Hon. Ichitta expressed dissatisfaction over the approach of the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu in tackling the security challenges in the State describing it as poor and ineffective.

He claim that the Governor has not done enough in securing lives and property of abians as the Chief security officer of the State.

The lawmaker emotionally disclosed that the recent kidnapping of Students of Abia State University Uturu, along Uturu-Okigwe axis, activities of cultists in Aba and its environs, killings of Abia citizens in bushes and farmlands by herdsmen and other terrible security issues in the State are quite alarming.

Supporting the motion, member representing Umuahia North State Constituency, Hon. Kelechi Onuzuruike, pointed out that the State government’s focus on Umunneochi and its environs alone is not ample but should beam its security searchlight to every nook and cranny of the State.

Lending their voices in support of the motion, the former Speaker and member representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, member representing Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency, Hon Ginger Onwusibe, and member representing Umunneochi State Constituency said that there is need to resort to local security adding that the idea of relying on the Federal Government security agencies like the Police and Military will not yield the desired results.

 

They advocated that the Homeland Security Ministry saddled with the responsibilities of securing abians should be well equipped by the State government with the required logistics to face the task of fighting insecurity within the State.
