Abia Assembly Frowns at Private Schools’ Imposition on Sales of Customized Texts and Exercise Books; Summons Education Authorities in the State

*Demands Immediate Posting of Medical Personnel to Ugwunagbo Multipurpose Hospital

The Abia State House of Assembly has, as a matter of urgency, passed a resolution directing its Committee on Education to invite the Commissioner for Basic Education, the leadership of ASUBEB, and other relevant education authorities in the state for interaction on the alleged sales and use of customized texts and exercise books in schools.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, announced the resolution during plenary, following a motion moved by the member representing Aba Central State Constituency, Hon. Stephen Ucheonye. He stated that the current trend is detrimental to parents and society at large.

According to the Speaker, serious attention must be directed toward the activities of the operators of institutions where future generations are groomed.

Earlier in the motion presentation regarding the use of customized texts and exercise books in private schools in Abia State, Hon. Stephen Ucheonye alleged that some proprietors of schools sell books at exorbitant prices, making it impossible for any two students to share one textbook.

The lawmaker, therefore, called on the State House of Assembly to intervene and put a stop to this menace, which he described as undue extortion of parents and guardians in the state.

As a result, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emeruwa, mandated the Committee on Education to do a thorough job and report to the House in a fortnight.

In another development, the House also passed a resolution urging the state government, through the Ministry of Health, to prompt the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, deploy medical doctors and other relevant medical personnel to the Sustainable Development Multipurpose Hospital in Ugwunagbo, with a view to managing the various health concerns of patients who visit the hospital in large numbers seeking medical solutions.

The resolution followed a matter of urgent public importance presented to the Assembly by the member representing Ugwunagbo State Constituency, Hon. Chijioke Uruakpa.
