The Super Falcons of Nigeria will later today clash with the Lionesses of Cameroon in the first semi-final of the on-going Africa Women Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons finished second in their group with six points as they defeated Zambia and Equatorial Guinea after they had lost to South Africa in their opening match.
Cameroon qualified as winners of their group with seven points having defeated Algeria and Maki and securing a draw against the host Ghana.
The Super Falcons are not in the best of form and today’s encounter will be very explosive as a final ticket and a place in next year’s Women World Cup are at stake.
The Lionesses will be eying revenge against the Nigerian ladies, who have inflicted a lot of defeats on the Cameroonians. In the last edition Nigeria defeated Cameroon in the final by a lone goal. In 2014 Super Falcons defeated the Lionesses by 2-0.
In 2004 Nigeria humiliated the ladies from Cameroon 5-0.
Meanwhile, Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby said today’s encounter will be exciting, “The match that awaits us against Cameroon promises to be exciting because it was the poster of the last two finals. Final before the final? Why not? In any case, we have been very effective against Zambia and Equatorial Guinea with 10 goals in two games. On that side it is going strong. Perhaps a favorable omen.”
In the second semi-final South Africa will take on Mali.
