EPL Week 1 Review

Mourinho Smiles at Last

After criticizing his players for their average performance during the pre-season and Manchester United management for not signing all the players he wanted, Jose Mourinho finally smiled on Friday as Manchester United started this season’s campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester City at the Theatre of Dreams.

United made a flying start , winning a penalty in the second minute when Daniel Amartey handled Alexis Sanchez’s deflected shot.  Captain of the day Paul Pogba scored from the spot.

Seven minutes to the end of the match, left-back Luke Shaw then scored the first senior goal of his career after controlling Juan Mata’s aerial pass to double their lead.

England international, Jamie Vardy came in as a substitute to head in a late consolation for Leicester after Ricardo Perreira’s cross had hit a post.

Foxes goalkeeper Schmeichel came forward for an injury-time corner but his header went wide.

Everton gets 90th red card, draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Everton became the the club with most red cards in the Premier League when they got their 90th red card when Phil Jagielka was sent off on the 40th minute after a dangerous challenge on Diogo Jota.

Brazilian winger Richarlison put Everton ahead on the 17th minute. The host equalized through Ruben Neves’ free kick – from the tackle which saw Jagielka sent off.

A goal in each half from Ryan Fraser and Callum Willson were all Bournemouth needed to crush Cardiff City at the Vitality Stadium.

The technically superior hosts were quick to dominate possession, pinning their opponents back in their own half for long periods and deservedly taking the lead when Ryan Fraser fired in from close range.

They would have doubled their lead when they were awarded a penalty when Callum Wilson was brought down after a tangle with Bruno Ecuele Manga, but the forward’s low spot kick was well saved by Neil Etheridge.

Willson atoned for his penalty miss in added time to give Bournemouth a first opening day win since they were promoted to the top flight in 2015.

Palace Went, Saw and Conquered Fulham

Crystal Palace handed EPL returnee Fulham a 2-0 defeat  at Craven Cottage. Patrick van Aanholt found Jeffrey Schlupp, who smashed home from inside the box amid slack marking from Calum Chambers on the 41st minute.

Ivory Coast forward Wilfred Zaha after handful of misses finally did seal the win with 11 minutes to play when coolly finishing under the Spanish goalkeeper after latching on to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s through ball.

Huddersfield Hammered By Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri warned that Chelsea will not get into the groove of winning until after 3 months. But his boys proved him wrong by hammering Huddersfield 3-0.

N’Golo Kante volleyed home on the 34th minute. Eleven minutes later a penalty from debutant Jorginho doubled the Blue’s lead.

Ten minutes from full time Pedro gave Sarri’s team the ideal start to their league campaign with the third goal.

Spurs Disunite Newcastle United

It took only 18 minutes for Tottenham Hotspur to disunite Newcastle United and all the three points at stake.

Jan Vertonghen’s early header put Spurs ahead, with technology confirming his effort had crossed the goalline by 9mm.

Newcastle United rallied round and equalized149 seconds later, when Joselu headed in Matt Ritchie’s superb cross after being left unmarked six yards from goal.

Dele Alli put the visitors back in front, timing a back-post run to perfection to meet Serge Aurier’s cross with a textbook header past home goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Arsenal Misfire At Home.

Arsenal FC started this season with a disappointing loss at home to defending champions Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling opened scoring on the 14th minute when he got the ball on the corner of the box, cut beyond two players and rifled home from 20 yards.

Arsenal’s effort to get the equalizer met a brick wall.

Just after the hour mark Benjamin Mendy, who assisted both goals, pulled the ball back for Bernardo Silva to blast in a second and killed off the game.

Southampton,  Burnley Play Goalless

Southampton and Burnley settled for a goalless draw. Both teams were evenly matched. It was a dingdong affair.

Burnley took control of the match in the early stages but could not find the back of the net.

The host left it too late to take the game to the visitors. But when they did after introducing new signings Danny Ings and Mohamed Elyounoussi  the course of the game could not be changed as the match ended in a barren draw.

Liverpool Wallop West Ham

The Reds started this season from where they stopped last season winning with the highest margin last weekend.

They welcomed West Ham United and walloped them 4-0.

Mohamed Salah’s early goal set Liverpool on their way to their biggest opening home league win since 1932. The Egyptian tapped in a 19th-minute opener from Andy Robertson’s cross on his return to action for the Reds at Anfield.

Sadio Mane scored a goal in each half before Sturridge put an icing to the cake with the fourth goal.
