Heavy Rain Damages Buildings in Old Express, Aba

A heavy rainstorm hit Aba on Sunday and caused serious damage in the Old Express area. More than 15 buildings had their roofs blown off.

The rain lasted for about 45 minutes to one hour and came with strong winds. These winds damaged houses, churches, and a school. Many people lost their homes, and property was destroyed.

People who saw the storm said the wind was very strong. It removed rooftops and left buildings open. Some parts of the area also experienced flooding, making it hard for people to move around and carry out their daily activities.

“We were not prepared for the storm,” said Mrs. Ginika from St. Peter’s Church. “We didn’t have time to save our things. Many of us lost valuable property.”

Another resident, Mr. Chukwuma Mba, said the situation is very bad. Some families now have no shelter and need urgent help.

Some of the affected places include Divine Mercy Mission International School and St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Attempts to speak with their authorities were not successful.

Residents also complained about bad roads in the area, saying they may make it difficult for rescue and help to reach them.

The incident has raised concerns about how strong buildings in the area are. People are calling for better building rules to reduce damage from such disasters.

At the time of this report, authorities had not yet fully checked the extent of the damage.
