The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has praised security agencies in Abuja for their sustained efforts in maintaining safety and tackling crime, particularly amid concerns over urban kidnapping.
Speaking to journalists during a routine inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across the FCT, the Minister noted that while crime exists in major cities worldwide, security operatives in Abuja have continued to effectively respond to threats and prevent escalation.
He disclosed that several criminal attempts, especially in satellite towns, had been foiled without widespread public awareness. Citing the recent rescue of kidnapped victims in Bwari, Wike stressed the importance of acknowledging the achievements of security personnel.
“There is nowhere in the world where crime does not exist. Abuja is not immune, but I do not believe there is banditry here. However, being a capital city, some individuals may attempt crimes like kidnapping. It is unrealistic to expect zero crime in any city,” he said.
Wike urged the media and residents to highlight the successes of security agencies rather than focusing solely on isolated incidents. He emphasized the need for continued public support for law enforcement efforts.
Road Projects Near Completion
The Minister also expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of key road projects scheduled for commissioning as part of activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The projects inspected include access roads to the Renewed Hope Estates in Karsana, the N16 dual carriageway linking Jahi and Gwarimpa, the full development of the Kuje Highway (Highway 105), and the dualization of the Kuje–Gwagwalada road.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the Airport Expressway–Kuje road, Wike said the project would significantly ease traffic and improve connectivity between satellite towns and the city centre.
“Residents can comfortably live in areas like Kuje and commute to work in the city without difficulty. This is part of our effort to decongest the city and promote urban expansion,” he stated.
Crackdown on Illegal Land Use
During the inspection, the Minister visited a site in Guzape District where a designated green area was being unlawfully developed into a residential estate. He ordered the immediate demolition of the structure and revocation of the approval.
“This land was designated as a green area. Any attempt to convert it into a residential estate is a violation of the FCT Master Plan. We will not tolerate such infractions,” Wike declared.
He reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal land conversion and warned against collusion in land-grabbing activities.
The inspection tour underscores the FCT Administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, urban planning compliance, and improved security across the capital territory.
