PDP: A VEHICLE WITH DEFLATED TYRES

In the world of cars, no matter how expensive a vehicle is, if the tyres are flat, it cannot move.

This simple example clearly describes the present condition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), once the strongest political party in Africa.

Today, the party is facing many problems. Members are leaving for other parties, there are internal crises, and the party is often mocked. However, it is important to remember that the PDP produced many of the politicians we have in Nigeria today.

Looking back to 1999, when Nigeria returned to democracy after years of military rule, the PDP was the ruling party that led the process. It laid the foundation for democratic governance and ruled the country for many years before handing over power to the APC.

When people compare the current government under the APC with the past PDP government, many Nigerians believe that the PDP performed better based on what they are experiencing today.

The PDP was once a very strong and popular party across Nigeria. It had massive support and was a household name. But today, the party is weak, divided, and struggling to survive.

Despite its problems, the PDP should still be given some credit. During its time in power, the economy, security, and education sectors were more stable than they are now. Nigeria also had a better image in the international community.

From the time of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the PDP made some efforts in governing the country.

However, the PDP also played a role in introducing bad practices into Nigeria’s political system. Issues like election rigging, fraud, violence, and the “do-or-die” style of politics became common during its rule. Election tribunals also became very active during this time.

There were also cases of abuse of power. This is one reason why the APC may continue to stay in power for a long time, because many politicians who moved from PDP to APC still carry the same habits.

The PDP also encouraged money politics, making politics look dirty and controlled by wealthy individuals.

Today, the party is suffering from the same problems it helped create. These issues have now turned against it.

Many Nigerians now see the PDP as a vehicle with deflated tyres unable to take any politician to their desired destination.

The party is close to collapse. Governors and members continue to defect to the APC, and this suggests that the PDP may soon become history. Many people now believe it is no longer a strong platform for serious politicians.

Sadly, many people who benefited from the party have abandoned it in its time of need. This shows the kind of politics we practice in Nigeria, where personal interest and corruption often come first, and many politicians do not want to stay in opposition.

Many PDP leaders and governors also have questionable records, which affects the party’s image.

The APC, on the other hand, seems to understand how to take advantage of the PDP’s weaknesses.

However, there is still hope for the PDP. If the leaders can come together, settle their differences, and work for peace and unity, the party can rebuild itself.

If this happens, the PDP may rise again in the future.
