Police Honour Retired IGP Egbetokun with Pull-Out Parade in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday held a colourful ceremonial pull-out parade at its Force Headquarters in Abuja to honour the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, following the completion of his policing career.

The ceremony marked the official end of Egbetokun’s service in the police force, which spanned more than three and a half decades. The retired police chief bowed out of active duty on February 25, 2026, after 36 years of service.

Speaking at the event, the current Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the occasion as a historic moment for the Force, noting that Egbetokun’s career was defined by dedication, professionalism and exemplary leadership.

Disu commended the former police chief for his contributions to improving operational efficiency, strengthening intelligence-driven policing and promoting professionalism and discipline among officers and men of the Force.

He also expressed appreciation on behalf of the entire police institution for Egbetokun’s service to the nation.

In his farewell remarks, Egbetokun expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nigeria through the Nigeria Police Force, describing his 36-year career as a great honour.

Reflecting on his tenure, the retired IGP said several reforms were introduced under his leadership to strengthen institutional processes and enhance the operational capacity of the Force.

According to him, the reforms included the expansion of the Intelligence Bureau into a full department, the elevation of the Legal and Medical Units to directorate status, and the development of the Nigeria Police Cybercrime Centre.

He also highlighted improvements made to the National Criminal Database as well as the establishment of additional Police Mobile Force squadrons, Area Commands and the Special Intervention Squad to strengthen the Force’s response to security challenges.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu; Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, Abubakar Yellman, represented by Kama Nkemkanma; the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi; and Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu.

Also present were former Inspectors-General of Police, including Mike Okiro and Ogbonna Onovo, as well as heads and representatives of other security agencies.

Traditional rulers also attended the ceremony, led by the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Kehinde Olugbenle.

The event celebrated Egbetokun’s legacy and contributions to policing reforms and institutional development in Nigeria.
