The Federal Government has approved a total of ₦48 billion for the upgrade of engineering and technology facilities in 12 selected universities across the country.
Under the TETFund Special High-Impact Intervention Project, each beneficiary institution will receive ₦4 billion to rehabilitate engineering workshops, modernise laboratories and install state-of-the-art equipment aimed at strengthening practical training and innovation.
Inaugurating the Ministerial Monitoring, Evaluation and Implementation Committee in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the intervention as a strategic investment designed to reposition Nigerian universities for global competitiveness.
He stressed that the allocation is strictly dedicated to engineering and technology upgrades and is separate from the regular 2026 disbursements of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
According to the minister, the success of the intervention will not be measured merely by funds released but by tangible outcomes, including functional facilities, enhanced hands-on competencies and the production of job-ready graduates capable of meeting industry demands.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to revitalising tertiary education infrastructure. He noted that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises human capital development and technological advancement.
Beneficiary institutions include the Federal University of Technology Minna, Federal University of Technology Akure, Federal University of Technology Owerri and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, among others.
The Ministry of Education assured that strict adherence to procurement processes, transparency and measurable performance indicators would guide the execution of the project to ensure value for money and sustainable impact.
The intervention is expected to significantly enhance the quality of engineering education and boost Nigeria’s capacity for technological innovation and industrial growth.
