The Measles Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign has started in Umuahia South Local Government Area to help protect children and prevent dangerous diseases.
The campaign was officially launched on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, by the Wife of the Executive Mayor of Umuahia South, Mrs. Jemilat Enwereuzo, at the Olokoro Clan Hall. Health workers, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), and other stakeholders attended the event.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Enwereuzo encouraged parents and guardians to make sure children aged 0–9 years receive the vaccine. She assured everyone that the vaccine is safe, free, and effective, and said the campaign is very important for the health and future of children in the area.
The Mayoress praised the Umuahia South Health Team, the Abia State Ministry of Health, the Local Government Health Authority, and development partners for their hard work in organizing the exercise. She also thanked the Wife of the Abia State Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for her continuous support for vaccination programmes across Abia State, especially in Umuahia South.
The WHO representative, Mr. Uche Nwachukwu, called on community members to support and take part in the vaccination programme, stressing that everyone has a role to play in stopping measles and rubella.
The Health Authority Secretary also spoke at the event and advised health workers to carry out the exercise with care and professionalism, noting that immunization is very important for keeping children healthy.
One of the highlights of the event was the sharing of gift items by the Mayoress to nursing mothers and children. The gifts included school bags and diapers.
The vaccination campaign will continue in different communities in Umuahia South, and residents are encouraged to cooperate fully to ensure its success.
