The State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Chukwuma Azode, has cautioned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against reckless driving during the Yuletide and beyond, stressing that human life must be protected at all costs.
Speaking on the increased incidents of road accidents often associated with the festive season, Comrade Azode reminded motorists that life is irreplaceable and should never be taken for granted.
He emphasised that safety must remain the top priority for all road users, urging drivers to avoid excessive speed regardless of road conditions.
“Life has no duplicate, as the saying goes. That is why the National Union of Road Transport Workers has continued to sensitise its drivers on the need to drive responsibly and observe safety rules, especially during the Christmas period.
“We must exercise caution at all times, because safety should always come first. We are all human, and every reasonable person understands that when you are behind the wheel, there is absolutely no need to over-speed”, Comrade Azode said.
The NURTW Boss further advised motorists to exercise restraint even on roads without speed bumps, noting that self-discipline remains key to preventing accidents.
On the issue of drink-driving, the NURTW chairman disclosed that there is a standing directive across motor parks prohibiting drivers from consuming alcohol before driving, with strict sanctions in place for violators.
According to him, enforcement of the policy is continuous, with penalties including suspension for any driver found guilty.
“In that aspect, I think we have park chairmen under National Union of Road Transport Workers, and we do sensitise our drivers that if you drink alcohol, don’t drive, and if you drive, don’t over-speed.
“We’ve been doing our best to make sure that we tackle it. And you know, it’s not a day thing. It’s something that is continuous. So, if we notice that you are drunk or you’ve taken anything like alcohol, we suspend you not to apply on that particular park, basically for two weeks”, he explained.
Comrade Azode also commended Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, for what he described as unprecedented strides in infrastructural development, particularly in the area of road construction and rehabilitation.
He noted that motorists across the State now enjoy smoother journeys on well-maintained roads devoid of potholes, adding that residents have never had it so good.
The NURTW Chairman assured the Governor of the Union’s continued support, pledging cooperation in promoting road safety and ensuring orderly transportation across the State.
