Otti Opens 44th Civil Service Conference, Seeks Stronger Public Service

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has opened the 44th Annual Conference of the Civil Service Commission. He urged participants to ensure their discussions help improve public service delivery across the country.

Speaking at the event held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Governor Otti represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu said his administration is committed to improving all parts of the state’s civil service, which he described as the “engine room of government.”

He explained that because government policies are carried out through the civil service, it must be efficient and strong to achieve the administration’s development plans. He encouraged participants to stay focused on the goals of the civil service and work towards making it more professional and productive.

In her welcome address, the Chairman of the Abia State Civil Service Commission, Pastor Eno Jerry Eze, PhD, welcomed delegates to the conference. She said the theme, “Repositioning Civil Service Commissions in Nigeria as Hub of Professionalism in Public Service Human Resource Management,” highlights the important role civil service commissions play in ensuring merit, fairness, and professionalism.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, stressed the need for a merit-based system to help improve the performance of Nigeria’s civil service and support national development.

In the vote of thanks, Hajia Hindatu Abdullahi thanked Governor Otti for his support and commended the planning committee for a successful event.

The opening ceremony included a documentary about Abia State and goodwill messages. It was attended by commissioners, permanent secretaries from state and federal agencies, and other top government officials.
