The Abia State Government in collaboration with the Federal Government, has announced a major partnership with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to deliver a landmark energy project expected to significantly transform power supply in Umuahia and strengthen electricity infrastructure across the State.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, and made available to Newsmen.
Prince Kanu said that the project is being implemented under the “visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has continued to champion critical infrastructural investments to support economic growth, enhance productivity and improve the daily lives of Nigerians”.
He added that the initiative aligns fully with the developmental agenda of Governor Alex Otti, noting that the present administration “remains fully committed to providing Abians with modern power solutions, efficient energy distribution and sustainable infrastructure that will accelerate development across communities”.
Prince Kanu explained that the groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, 3 December 2025, at the Secretariat Complex, Ogburube Layout, Umuahia, will be performed by the Governor and will mark the commencement of key energy installations in Umuahia, including:
A 1×7.5MVA, 33/11KV Injection Substation
1KM of 33KV Line and 1.2KM of 11KV Line
Installation of two units of 300KVA distribution substations
Deployment of 2KM of low-tension (LT) line.
According to Commissioner, the facilities are projected to “tremendously improve power reliability, reduce transformer load stress, boost commercial activities, and enhance overall grid stability for Umuahia and surrounding areas”.
He described as the event as “a historic milestone that reinforces the strong synergy between the Federal Government and the Abia State Government in delivering tangible, people-centred development”.
