FG PUSHES AHEAD WITH FIRST NATIONAL EDTECH STRATEGY TO BOOST DIGITAL LEARNING ACROSS NIGERIA

The Federal Government has taken a major step toward transforming teaching and learning nationwide with the advancement of Nigeria’s first-ever National Education Technology (EdTech) Strategy.

This follows the successful hosting of the Mid-Term Co-Creation Workshop in Abuja, held at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre.

The session was jointly convened by the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), bringing together development partners, state education commissioners, agency heads, and private-sector experts.

The workshop was led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. It marked the halfway milestone in the drafting of the national strategy and provided an opportunity to validate the work of the six Technical Working Groups operating under three core pillars — Digital Backbone, Learning Ecosystem and Sustainability Engine.

Both Ministers underscored the urgency of building a coordinated national EdTech ecosystem capable of delivering equitable, high-quality learning opportunities, in line with the digital economy agenda and the Renewed Hope vision of the Federal Government.

Dr. Alausa stressed that the EdTech Strategy is integral to the Nigeria Sector Wide Renewal Initiative, especially as it champions digitalisation and data-driven education. In his remarks, Dr. Tijani highlighted the need to strengthen digital infrastructure and real-time data systems to enable inclusive and technology-enabled learning across the country.

Representing the Minister of State for Education, the Director of the Education Planning, Research and Development (EPRD) Department affirmed that the strategy places people — especially learners and teachers — at the heart of digital transformation.

Development partners, including the World Bank and the Mastercard Foundation, praised the inclusive, system-wide and collaborative approach adopted by the Federal Government.

As part of the meeting, the Federal Government also inaugurated the reconstituted NGRen and TERAS Governing Board and Technical Committee, signalling renewed national commitment to building a unified and sustainable digital education ecosystem.
