The Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has dismissed media reports alleging that some members of staff were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), on the orders of the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council.
In a statement issued to newsmen by the University’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Dr. Ubadire Agua, the institution described the reports as misleading and capable of inciting unnecessary tension within the University community.
According to the statement, the University is not aware of any arrest of any University staff in MOUAU by DSS, noting that the Chairman of the Governing Council could not have directed any security agency to make such arrests without informing the University Management.
The Management expressed concern that the publications claimed the supposed arrests targeted staff of Abia State origin who allegedly demanded that indigenes be considered in the selection of the next Vice-Chancellor. MOUAU authorities warned that such narratives were harmful and risked destabilizing the peaceful atmosphere the institution has enjoyed over the last five years under the administration of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe.
The University appealed to journalists to verify facts before publication and to refrain from sensational headlines that may inflame the leadership transition process currently underway.
The statement also urged security agencies to remain vigilant, neutral, and unbiased while carrying out their lawful duties, emphasizing that the University values its partnership with them in maintaining peace on campus.
Calling on all stakeholders to prioritize unity, the Management stressed that “peace is priceless” and essential for sustaining the achievements of the outgoing administration.
“Please, let us join hands together to maintain peace in MOUAU”, the statement concluded.
