Abia Hosts National Volleyball League

Thirty-four volleyball clubs from across the country have converged on Umuahia, the Abia State capital, for the second phase of the National Division 1 and 2 Volleyball Leagues.

The competition, which kicks off tomorrow, will feature 12 female teams, including Abia State’s Excelsior, competing in Division 1. The Abia side currently sits second on the table after the conclusion of Phase 1.

In the men’s category, 10 teams will contest for supremacy in Division 1, while 12 teams will lock horns in Division 2.

According to a statement released by the Abia State Director of Sports, Comrade George Obioma, matches will be staged at two venues — the Kanu Nwankwo Indoor Sports Hall at the Umuahia Township Stadium, and the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) volleyball court in Umudike.

In the men’s Division 1, Adamawa Spartans will take on Kwara United, while NIS face Ajase Ipo. Sword Spikers will battle Safety Spikers, and Lifecamp Volleyball Club will meet Katsina United. The last match of the day will see Wikki square off against Defence Spikers.

In the women’s Division 1, Bayelsa Spikers will confront Fire Service, as NIS take on the home side, Excelsior. Netforce Queens will clash with Ekiti Queens, while Vipers aim to dismantle Sokoto Caliphate. Adamawa United Ladies will play Bayonet Spikers, as Safety Queens meet Plateau Rocks.

In Division 2 action, Sokoto VC will face Kuje United, while Edo Beads take on Ekiti VC. Netforce will meet Excelsior of Abia State, and Light VC will seek to outshine Rhino VC. Meanwhile, Bayelsa Spikers battle Bayonet, and Plateau Rocks go head-to-head with Fire Service.
