The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the payment of over ₦50 million to the families of 265 deceased civil servants whose entitlements had remained unpaid for more than 16 years.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Otti.
Prince Kanu described the approval as a reflection of Governor Otti’s compassion and commitment to the welfare of Abia workers, both serving and retired.
“In a compassionate mood and ongoing commitment to the improvement of the welfare of Abia workers, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the backlog of payments to deceased staff in the Abia State civil service, spanning a period of over 16 years.
“This approval comes with a payment of over ₦50 million to the families of 265 deceased staff,” the Commissioner stated.
He explained that the payment would be made directly to the verified next of kin of the deceased civil servants, stressing that the gesture underscores the administration’s empathy and sense of responsibility towards those who served the state faithfully.
“This is another welfare package made possible by this administration that sets it apart from previous ones before it,” he added.
Prince Kanu reaffirmed Governor Otti’s commitment to ensuring that every worker in the state receives fair treatment and due entitlements.
