Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has once again blazed the trail in digital democracy with the successful conduct of its 2025/2026 Student Union Government (SUG) elections through a fully electronic voting system—the second consecutive year of adopting e-voting.
The seamless exercise allowed students to cast their ballots remotely from anywhere in the world, made possible by the institution’s robust digital infrastructure designed to ensure accessibility, transparency, and integrity.
The election, supervised by the Electoral Committee (ELECO) in partnership with the ICT Unit, was closely monitored by candidates’ agents to forestall malpractice. However, concerns arose over alleged misuse of matriculation numbers, prompting swift intervention by management, which assured students of strict safeguards against fraud.
Rector, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, reaffirmed the institution’s zero tolerance for malpractice.
“We are not training criminals we are training people who will serve society the right way.Any candidate found tampering with the process will be disqualified”he warned.
Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Chinyere Ezeh, described the exercise as the most credible in the Polytechnic’s history.
“This election has raised the bar for student leadership contest on our campus.The transparency and zeal of our students are truly commendable”she said
Final results are expected to be announced after a thorough verification process by the Rector.
The successful e-voting exercise has been hailed as a milestone in the institution’s digital transformation drive and a bold step in nurturing democratic values among its student population.
Dr.Eze further noted that the official announcement of the winners would be announce by the rector after the verification of the results.
