Nick Woltemade marked his Newcastle United debut with a powerful header to secure the club’s first win of the season against Wolves at St James’ Park.
The 22-year-old German striker, signed for a club-record £69m from Stuttgart. In the 29th minute, he shrugged off Emmanuel Agbadou to meet Jacob Murphy’s lofted cross, thundering a header beyond Sam Johnstone.
Newcastle came close to doubling their advantage before the break when Sandro Tonali’s 20-yard strike rattled the inside of the post.
Wolves, who were waxing, waned after falling behind. Rodrigo Gomes and Hwang Hee-chan both forced early saves from Nick Pope, but Vítor Pereira’s side never recovered their momentum and remained without a point this season.
