Deputy Governor Emetu Celebrates ‘Iri Ji’ Festival with Amaekpu, Ohafia Communities
The Deputy Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, joined the people of Amaekpu and other communities in Ohafia on Sunday to celebrate the annual ‘Iri Ji’ (New Yam) festival, a cherished cultural event that signifies the beginning of the harvest season.
The vibrant celebration featured a rich display of Igbo traditions, including traditional rites, dances, music, and the ceremonial eating of the new yam. Engr. Emetu actively participated in the festivities, warmly engaging with community members and reaffirming his commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage and communal harmony.
In his address, the Deputy Governor underscored the importance of cultural festivals like ‘Iri Ji’ in promoting unity, peace, and a shared identity among the people. He urged the youth to embrace and uphold their traditions, emphasizing that cultural pride is key to community development and resilience.
Engr. Emetu also praised the indigenes of Ohafia for their unwavering spirit and pledged the state government’s continued support for grassroots development initiatives across the region.
Also speaking at the event, the Udumeze of Ohafia and Chairman of the Council of Ohafia Monarchs, His Royal Majesty Ezie Awa Oji Udonsi, expressed deep appreciation to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his administration’s impactful projects in Ohafia and its surrounding areas.
He commended the Governor’s developmental strides across the state and assured him of Ohafia’s continued support.
The ‘Iri Ji’ festival, deeply rooted in Igbo agricultural tradition, symbolizes gratitude for a successful farming season and reinforces values of unity, peace, and mutual cooperation among communities.
