Delta Government unveils Ultra-Modern ICT/CBT centre in Onicha-Olona, promotes youth empowerment through technology

The Delta State Government, in a bid to promote digital literacy and youth empowerment, has commissioned a 300-capacity Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre in Onicha-Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area. The facility, supported by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, is expected to serve as a major hub for digital training and innovation in the region.

 

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the commissioning on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, described the project as a significant step towards closing the digital divide and preparing Delta youths for global opportunities.

 

He commended the NDIC for its role in constructing the centre and applauded the Ministry of Science and Technology for equipping it with cutting-edge ICT tools, furniture, and accessories to ensure its full functionality.

 

“Today’s event is remarkable, as it brings a modern communication and learning hub right to the heart of our community. With the establishment of this ICT and CBT centre in Onicha-Olona, our young people no longer need to look far for such facilities.

 

 

“More than just infrastructure, this state-of-the-art centre represents a bold step in our commitment to bridge the digital divide, empower our people, and prepare Deltans with the skills and opportunities to excel in the 21st century”, the Governor said.

Governor Oborevwori expressed appreciation to Mrs. Diana Okonta, a former NDIC Board Member, for her tireless advocacy that helped facilitate the project’s execution. He also acknowledged the role of former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, who approved the project’s first phase.

 

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to human capital development under the MORE Agenda, the Governor assured that the state would continue to provide platforms for digital literacy, self-reliance, and job creation.

 

He urged residents of Onicha-Olona and surrounding communities to embrace the opportunities offered by the new centre.

 

In his remarks, Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, hailed the initiative as a catalyst for educational growth, innovation, and economic progress.

 

“The centre is a gateway to effective education, innovation, and economic growth for Onicha-Olona and Delta State at large”,he stated, commending the state government for seeing the project through to completion.

 

 

Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Daniel Odigie, described the facility as a hub for digital learning, coding, app development, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and computer literacy.

 

“It is a centre for learning and innovation  designed to nurture talent, spark creativity, and unlock boundless potential”,he said.

 

 

 

Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area, Hon. Chinye Bazim, praised the Oborevwori-led administration for citing the project in the locality, stating that it would serve as a game-changer for youth empowerment and educational advancement.

He also highlighted other developmental projects in the area, including the near completion of the Issele-Uku – Otulu Road, ongoing Onicha – Ugbo township roads, and the College of Nursing Science at Onicha -Uku.

 

President-General of the Onicha-Olona Development Union, Sir Patrick Ejido, commended the facility’s modern features  including 300 workstations and a solar power system  and described it as a beacon of innovation and opportunity for the community.

 

“The centre, equipped with 300 workstations, solar power supply, and modern facilities, is a beacon of innovation and empowerment for the community”, he said, thanking the NDIC, community leaders, and other stakeholders for making the vision a reality.

 

 

 

He further assured that the Onicha-Olona community would take responsibility for maintaining and protecting the facility.

 

The inauguration ceremony drew a large audience, including government functionaries, traditional rulers, community representatives, and enthusiastic youths.
