Rector Advocates Domestication of Artificial Intelligence in Tertiary Institutions

The Rector of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Engr. Christopher Kalu Okoro, has called for the widespread domestication of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Speaking at the just concluded South East Zonal Summit of the Nigerian Institute of Management(Chartered), in Umuahia, Engr. Okoro explained that AI is the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, adding that decision-making has become an indispensable tool in today’s digital world.

According to him, AI systems leverage algorithms and data to make predictions, classify objects, and generate actionable insights. He stressed that Nigeria’s educational institutions must align with global trends by adopting AI in their curricula and operations.

“As an institution, once we have the right framework and policy, we can move in the direction the world is going”, he said.

The Rector disclosed that from the 2024/2025 academic session, Artificial Intelligence would become a compulsory course at Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.

“We have fully domesticated AI studies here because our State Governor is digitally inclined, and we are expected to align with this vision”, he stated.

The Rector further disclosed that AI is now integrated into all aspects of the polytechnic’s operations, including academic and administrative management, urging other tertiary institutions to embrace AI, noting that it would enhance efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness in education.

Delivering his keynote address, the Rector highlighted the importance of AI, stating that it is key for growth and survival, expressing his institution’s readiness to partner with both public and private stakeholders in adopting AI-driven operations. He emphasized that bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), should take the lead in advocating policies for the regulation and integration of AI, stressing that if not properly regulated, could destroy the nation’s economy.

He further dispelled concerns that AI would make humans redundant, explaining that its domestication is not intended to replace human intelligence or manpower, but rather, to complement and enhance it, ensuring optimal performance and productivity.
