Methodist Girls High School, Umuahia, has emerged champions of the 2024/2025 Inter-Secondary School Debate Competition, organized by Vision Africa Radio 104.1 FM in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Education.
The highly anticipated competition, which featured 14 secondary schools—both public and private—from the three senatorial zones of Abia State, culminated in a thrilling final where Methodist Girls High School convincingly outperformed Valley View College, Ebem Ohafia, who claimed second place.
Speaking on the opposing side of the topic, “Is Social Media Impactful in the Lives of Teenagers?”, the winning team earned praise from judges for their compelling arguments and eloquent delivery.
Basic Secondary School, Aba, and Ndume Otuka Secondary School, Ibeku, Umuahia, secured third and fourth positions, respectively.
Speaking at the grand finale, the wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, commended the students for their brilliance and confidence, describing them as future leaders. Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere, she highlighted the administration’s commitment to education, revealing that 20% of the state’s annual budget is allocated to the education sector.
“This is a testament to Governor Alex Otti’s belief in education as a critical investment in the future of Abia’s children,” she said, while urging students to stay focused on their studies and avoid social vices.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Chinedum Ubochi, represented by Mrs. Stella Ogugbue, Director of Scholarship in the Ministry, also lauded the students’ performance. He was joined by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Ahukwe, who emphasized the government’s commitment to girl-child education and gender equality.
“This debate highlights what is possible when our students are provided with a conducive learning environment and access to quality education. We remain committed to supporting academic excellence across Abia,” they affirmed.
In his address, President of Vision Africa and convener of the debate, Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, underscored the importance of public discourse and youth empowerment through education.
“This platform is designed to ignite the minds of our young people and prepare them for leadership,” Bishop Onuoha said, praising the students for their performances and expressing hope that they will become global leaders.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti and the First Lady for their support of youth development and educational advancement, promising continued collaboration.
The high point of the event was the announcement by Bishop Onuoha of free SSCE (WAEC) registration for the 24 students representing the top four finalist schools. Additionally, trophies, educational materials, and individual awards—including Best Speaker—were presented to deserving participants.
The debate competition stands as a beacon of Abia’s commitment to nurturing intellectual growth, critical thinking, and leadership among its youth.
