In a decisive move to strengthen community security and enhance public safety across Abia State, the state government has commenced the profiling and registration of all vigilante groups operating within its boundaries.
In an interview with Newsmen during the verification and capturing exercise of Vigilantes in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the State, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland Security, Fire and Emergency Services, Mr. Chukwunenye Alajemba, said that the initiative was in direct response to the growing proliferation of unregulated vigilante groups in the state and across the country.
According to Alajemba, the increase in the number of individuals and groups operating under the name ‘vigilante’ without proper structure or oversight, has become troubling, hence the move by the State, to capture them, so authorities would know who the vigilantes are.
He said the Governor had directed for the proper identification of the vigilantes, profile them and as well, develop a comprehensive database. “This will allow us to know who is operating in each community and help us track their activities”,he said.
Mr Alajemba disclosed that the initiative would be carried out across the 17 Local Government Areas of the State, gathering vital data on the leadership, membership and operational structure of vigilante groups in each area.
“Particular attention will be paid to the ownership and control of arms, as the unchecked acquisition of weapons by unregistered groups poses a significant security risk.
“Our concern is that people are purchasing arms for themselves in the name of community security. Without proper oversight, this becomes a potential threat. We need to know how many weapons are in circulation and who controls them”, he added.

He stated that the capturing of vigilantes was coming on the heels of a security incident in Umunneochi, after which the Governor immediately deployed him alongside the Brigadier General of the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, to assess and address the situation. He added that the team also visited neighboring Isuikwuato, which signaled the government’s commitment to acting swiftly in response to threats.
Alajemba also reiterated that the Governor remained committed to securing lives and property in the state. “As the Chief Security Officer of Abia State, the Governor takes the safety of Abians seriously. His proactive measures are part of a broader strategy to create a stable environment for residents and attract investors”.
He urged residents to cooperate with the exercise and remain vigilant, promising transparency and community involvement throughout the process.
