Children’s Day: Abia Lawmaker, Erondu Jnr Calls for Greater Investment in Nigerian Children

The Chairman, House Committee on Public Service in the Abia State House of Assembly (ABHA), Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, has felicitated with Nigerian children on the occasion of Children’s Day 2025, calling for renewed commitment to their welfare, education, protection, and overall development.

In a statement from his Media Office and made available to newsmen today, Erondu Jnr described children as “the most treasured asset of our future,” stressing the need for urgent action on both global and national challenges such as child labour, abuse, limited access to quality education, and rising concerns around mental health.

“The Nigerian child today faces a rapidly changing world, with challenges ranging from poverty and displacement to digital safety and climate-related insecurity.
“We cannot afford to pay lip service to their needs. It is our moral and legislative duty to protect, nurture, and empower them”, he noted.

The lawmaker representing Obingwa-West State Constituency, who reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to championing legislation and policy initiatives that would protect the rights and welfare of children in Abia State, called for sustained and increased investment in the Nigerian child, particularly in areas of education, healthcare, and security.

Decrying the alarming figure of 18.3 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, the former Chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA) urged key stakeholders to intensify efforts in expanding educational access, especially in rural communities. He emphasized the importance of delivering such access at little or no cost to the most vulnerable populations.

The former Director of Enyimba FC also underscored the need for stronger partnerships between government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector in building a future where every child can thrive.

“Beyond celebrations, Children’s Day must serve as a call to action, to legislate, implement, and monitor policies that provide a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for our children,” he said.

Erondu Jnr further announced plans to scale up his constituency-based Child Empowerment Programme to reach more vulnerable children.
