Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Monday convened an expanded Executive Council meeting with members of the State House of Assembly where he signed 18 Executive Bills into law.
Some of the newly signed laws include the Abia State Senior Citizens Law 2025, Abia State Road Maintenance Agency (Repeal) Law 2025, Abia State Estate Development Agency (Repeal) Law 2025, and the Abia State Orientation Agency (Amendment) Law 2025, among others.
The newly signed bills bring the total number of Executive Bills assented to by Governor Otti since 2023 to 30.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Otti said the new laws reflect carefully considered legislative actions geared towards advancing his administration’s vision in key areas such as performance-based governance, accountability, and feasibility.
“These legislations align with the outcomes of our community and neighborhood development surveys, as well as the recommendations of the 2023 Transition Committee”, the Governor stated.
He commended the leadership of the State House of Assembly for its unwavering commitment to the “New Abia” agenda, noting that their partnership has significantly boosted the administration’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.
“Without legislative support, much of what has been achieved in a short period could have come at a higher cost. I have no doubt that the volume of legislations we have put in place will guarantee the sustenance of the gains we’ve made over the last few years.
“Whether you are looking at infrastructure expansion protocols, development roadmaps, or smaller government agencies, it’s evident that a lot is changing in our urban and semi-urban centres.
“My conviction is that the excellent leadership of this government will not just endure, but bear even greater fruits in the years ahead.
“What we have gathered to do this afternoon represents another layer of our holistic governance philosophy. This session offers us a unique opportunity to unite as partners in the shared vision of building a new Abia”, he said.
Presenting the bills to the Governor, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the bills as “abstract but impactful,” noting that several of them are amendments to existing laws.
“These 18 bills, some of which amend old laws, will yield tangible benefits in the lives of our people”, he said.
Rt Hon Emeruwa also commended the present administration for restoring hope and joy in the state, and assured of continued legislative support for the Executive arm.
In their separate goodwill messages, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Austin Meregini; Majority Leader, Hon. Uchenna Kalu Okoro and the Member representing Ukwa West State Constituency, Hon. Godwin Adiele, praised Governor Otti for his pragmatic, focused, and visionary leadership.
They reiterated the State Assembly’s commitment to sustaining good governance in the State.
Also speaking, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, confirmed that the Otti-led administration has successfully passed 30 Executive Bills to date.
He noted that the present administration has also prioritized transparency and policy-driven legislation, in line with the Governor’s manifesto.
