NIGER DELTA SPORTS FESTIVAL: Team Abia’s Performance So Far

Since the commencement of the inaugural edition of the Niger Delta Sports Festival, Team Abia have been vying for glory. Here is a round-up of their performance so far.

HANDBALL

Abia female Handball team started with 23-4 victory over Rivers State before they defeated Cross River 27-1. Their male counterpart were not that fortunate as they lost to Delta 23-11 and Edo 21-11.

The female team defeated Ondo 9-6 to qualify for the quarter-finals.

FOOTBALL

Abia State male football team opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Delta while their female counterpart hammered Akwa Ibom 6-0.

While the male team later lost 2-0 to Edo State. The ladies qualified for the semi-finals after defeating Cross River 5-2.

TABLE TENNIS

Chinyere Okafor defeated her Cross River and Bayelsa opponents 3-0 and 3-1 to progress to the next round. She eventually reached the final but lost 4-3 to her Cross River opponent to settle for Silver.

Abia State female team also qualified for the quarter-final.

PARA-ATHLETICS

Nnanna Lekwa won Gold in shot-put with a throw of 9.49m as Chidimma Dennis won Bronze in Shot-put in F42/44 with a throw of 8.75m.

SWIMMING

Ijeoma Chisom won Bronze in the 200m individual medley race while Ihechi Emmanuel won Bronze in 50m and Bronze in 100m butterfly race. Joshua Opute competed in the 200m breast stroke and won Bronze. Ijeoma Ihuoma won Bronze in 100m Butterfly.

BASKETBALL

Abia State lost 40-41 to Delta.

VOLLEYBALL

Abia State male team defeated Cross River 2-0 while their female counterpart lost 1-2 to Imo State.

PARA-POWERLIFTING

Nnenna Ijeri won Gold in 86kg.

ATHLETICS

Winchi Ngozi won Silver in Javelin throw while Ezinne Uche won Bronze. Esther Affigbo won Gold in 5000m race.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Vitalis Eze won 3 Bronze medals in 51kg.

BOXING

Dennis Onuegbu defeated Delta State to reach the semis.
