Women Urged To Develop Potentials For Positive Change

Women have been urged to uphold their rights and fully leverage on their leadership potentials to effect changes in the society, particularly in the post Covid 19 era.

This is coming from women who have been able to rise above board to contribute their quota in nation building and making positive changes in Abia State.

Interacting with the press after the International Women’s Day Celebration, the Abia State President of National Council of Women Societies (NCWS),Mrs Eunice Nwaigwe, said women have what it takes to bring lasting solutions to the challenges the world is facing, thereby making the world a better place.

According to Mrs Nwaigwe, time had gone, when women were perceived as only good in the kitchen, saying that women could now hold political positions to bring the desired changes, adding that naturally, women are wired to bring a golden touch in whatever they do.

Speaking on the just concluded International Women’s Day celebration, entitled “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a Covid-19 World”,the NCWS president said the theme celebrated the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the pandemic and highlighting the gaps that remain.

She said the theme was apt,as it did not only afford women who have been disadvantaged by the Covid 19 pandemic to brace up to the new barriers that have emerged as a result of the pandemic, but to source out ways to carve a nitch for themselves amidst the pandemic.

Mrs Nwaigwe, however, challenged Abia women to remain resolute and dogged in effecting positive changes wherever they find themselves, adding that with their enormous roles both at the home front, place of work among others, they should be determined in upholding the rights of women at all times.

The chairman Medical Protocol Team of Abia state Covid-19 Response and Consultant Public Health Physician, Dr Caro Iwuoha, said the International women’s day celebration, afforded women all over the world to be appreciated and celebrated for what they stand for and their contributions in nation building.

She said the yearly event, created an avenue for women to demand for equal opportunities both in the political and socio-economic space.

According to her, women are not being carried along politically, regardless of their capabilities, adding that women should come out, empower themselves academically, professionally and otherwise, so they could fit into any policy making body.

Dr Iwuoha reminded women that the covid -19 pandamic had left the world in a disadvantaged position, hence the need for women to take up responsibilities that could create a future that is sustainable, peaceful with equal rights and opportunities for all.

As a medical Expert, she advised women to take their health seriously, particularly on the area of cervical and breast cancer screening, which she said has been on rampage in recent times, adding that there is need for regular screening of their breast and cervix.
