The Chairperson of the Widows of the Fallen Heroes, Cross River State Chapter, Mrs. Helen Andrew, has commended the Nigerian Army for their unwavering support toward the widows.
Mrs. Andrew, who made the commendation during the celebration of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day held at the Millennium Park Cenotaph in the state capital, also used the opportunity to appeal for more support from corporate organizations and private individuals to boost the welfare of the widows.
She also reminded the state government to fulfill promises made to the widows, aimed at improving their lives, particularly through social intervention programs.
The Deputy Governor of the state, Hon. Peter Odey, who represented the Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, during the celebration, re-emphasized the state’s commitment to making the lives of the widows better.
The Deputy Governor later led government dignitaries in a file to lay wreaths at the tomb of the fallen heroes. This was followed by the Service Commanders, representatives of the Nigerian Legion, representatives of the widows of the fallen heroes, and the representative of the diplomatic mission in the state.
The highlights of the event included the release of pigeons, signifying peace, and the gun salute.
