Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara

Opposition Leaders React to Recent Appeal Court Ruling on Rivers Fund

Some opposition political party leaders have called on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to focus more on governance following the recent Appeal Court ruling.

As you may know, the Appeal Court in Abuja set aside all orders restraining the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government.

In an interview with our reporter, the spokesperson of the Labour Party in Rivers State, Gogo Wellington, said the judgment has reinforced the confidence Rivers people have in the judiciary. He stated that the Appeal Court’s decision gives some level of audacity to the governor’s actions and urged the governor to align his decisions with the will of the people of Rivers State.

“It is a welcome development for us because we believe that the judiciary should be the last hope of the common man. So, when rulings like this, which are consistent with the expectations of the people, are granted, it gives us reasons to believe that the judiciary still functions as it should,” he said.

On his part, the chairman of the Zenith Labour Party in the state, Benjamin Ogbobula, described the judgment as a win-win for the people of Rivers State. He stated that God has begun to disgrace those detractors who want to wreck Rivers State. He urged the governor to remain focused and undistracted.

“He should continue what he is doing for the betterment of Rivers State. It is Rivers money for Rivers people. As such, he should stand firm and not be afraid or distracted. God, who has led him to this position, will take him to the next level,” Ogbobula added.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, described the actions of those who took the Rivers State Government to court over fund allocation as judicial terrorism. He stated that despite the court case, the State Government remains focused on carrying out several projects. He assured that the government would not abandon ongoing road projects due to politics, contrary to some claims.

“Despite the challenges and distractions from enemies, whom I describe as judicial terrorists, the governor is focused and working. To say that the governor abandoned a road project because of one person is totally false. The governor is not structured in that kind of thinking. The government is tackling one project at a time. We cannot cover the entire 23 LGAs in one day, but whatever is yet to be done will be done,” the commissioner concluded.
