The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (Rtd.), has disclosed that a new regulation is being introduced to foster better understanding between road users and the military at checkpoints across the state.
Navy Commander Ubah made this known, Monday, while answering questions from addressing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting.
He announced that the Nigerian Army has introduced a three-digit emergency line, 193, to enhance civilian confidence in the military and improve communication.
Responding to reports that civilians are being compelled by the military to fill sandbags at checkpoints, the Security Adviser clarified that the State Government is providing concrete barriers as safer alternatives.
He emphasized that these measures aim to enhance security at strategic points, adding that the presence of security personnel in the capital and other locations is primarily for public safety.
Addressing concerns about the resurgence of military checkpoints, particularly along the Umuokpara-Onuimo road, Commander Ubah attributed the development to the increasing wave of criminal activities, including kidnappings.
He highlighted that a joint security meeting involving the Minister of Defense and the five Southeast States was recently convened to establish a stronger, more effective security framework for the region.
