Cross River State Mandates Asset Declarations for Local Government Aspirants

Cross River State To achieve transparency and accountability, as well as to prevent corruption and conflicts of interest, the Cross River State Government has demanded that aspirants for the October 26 Local Government Chairmanships and Councillorships declare their assets before participating in the election.

In a press release signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Enoh, on October 10, it was directed that all aspirants must comply with this requirement before qualifying for the election.

The release further stated that the asset declaration is in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. Failure to declare personal assets will result in automatic disqualification for the aspirants.

In line with Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended, officers contesting in the Local Government Elections are required to resign 30 days before the election and are warned against making false declarations.

According to the directive, all public officers intending to vie for the election are instructed to go to the Office of the Code of Conduct Bureau at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Calabar to declare their assets and to resign from public office at least 30 days before the election.
