ASEPA sensitizes citizens, set to ensure bagging of waste
To ensure sanity in the disposal of waste, the State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has embarked on a sensitization exercise in the major streets, roads and communities of Umuahia, North, South, and Ikwuano L.G.As.
The agency during the exercise also disclosed that it would soon commence enforcement on the compulsory bagging of waste before disposing them on Asepa designated buckets.
The Deputy General Manager Asepa Umuahia zone Catechist Ambrose Jonah who disclosed this, further explained that the exercise which will commence on the 5th of August, would start with places like the hotels and eateries.
He pointed out that the customized waste bag can be obtained in the Asepa office or Umuahia, South and Ikwuano Local government Headquarters.
According to him, the bagging of the waste in different bags such as biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and biomedical bags will enable the agency to sort out the waste properly, pointing out that the initiative is in line with the global best practices.
Catechist Jonah advised the public to support government efforts and Asepa in sustaining the cleanliness of the state, by ensuring that they obtain the bags and bagged their waste before disposing of them.
He disclosed that the defaulters will be arraigned before the environmental court while stressing the need for people to dispose of their waste between 5pm to 6am approved time.
