Abia State Government has inaugurated a Council on the Ease of Doing Business to enhance the state’s position as a preferred investment destination.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu announced this while briefing Newsmen on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu disclosed that Abia state is reforming it’s business regulatory environment to provide optimal service to investors to enable the state take it’s rightful place as a preferred destination for business.
He said that the newly inagurated Council is chaired by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and comprises several key officials, including the Honorable Commissioners for Trade and Commerce, Budget and Planning, Justice and Attorney General, Digital Economy and SMEs, Power and Public Utilities, Lands and Housing, Information and Culture, and the Principal Secretary to the Governor while the SSA to the Governor on Ease of Doing Business, Barr. Agbonma Ukobasi will act as the Council’s secretary.
The Commissioner said that the State Government has adopted the State Business Enabling Reform Action Plan (BERAP) 2024 and approved the 2023 BERAP progress report.
“Let me also inform us also that the Government has released the Q2 Budget Performance Report.The release of the Q2 Budget report is one of the requirements of good governance”, the Commissioner stated.
Prince Kanu who revealed that Abia State has also achieved a commendable ranking of 8th out of 36 states in climate change initiatives added that the remarkable improvement highlights the effective leadership of Governor Otti.
He noted that the state had hirthetho languished at the bottom of various governance and development indices, often ranking 36th out of 36 states noting that the paradigm shift under the new administration has resulted in substantial progress and recognition.
Accordingly to the Commissioner, Abia’s ranking of 8th out of 36 states of the federation is based on several factors, including the initiatives towards climate change action, the number of climate-tagged projects in the current year’s budget, the development of climate change policies, online media visibility, and participation in national climate change programs.
He also disclosed that progress has been made in the certificate verification and upload for the state workforce revealing that so far, 12,274 workers have signed up in the exercise with 43,403 academic certificates uploaded while 29,240 service documents have also been uploaded.
Contributing, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Kingsley Anosike highlighted the state’s budget performance.
“We tagged our budget a green budget which means that the project which are being carried out in it are essentially green.
“So far on recurrent, we are at 29.9 percent of full year plan as at the end of June, in terms of capital we have done about 17.3 percent of the plan.
“Over all, we have done a total of 108.9 billion naira in terms of expenditure which is a collaboration of recurrent and capital expenditures”, Anosike revealed.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to accountability and transparency pointing out that all budget details available to the public on the government’s website, www.abiastate.gov.ng.
