Àbia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti says he is working in partnership with the Governors of the South East Zone to make the Region an ideal destination for economic investments.
Governor Otti stated this on Tuesday, when he received a delegation from the South East University, led by the Acting Pro Chancellor, Dr Venatius Ogueze, who came to discuss the proposed citing of the institution in the Abia state.
Governor Otti, expressed his administration’s commitment to supporting the establishment of the University in the state , acknowledged it’s significance in providing quality education to the people of the South East region.
He noted Governor’s of the South Eastern region are evolving favourable policies for the zone and assured that his administration will prevail on them to support the noble initiative.
Otti said; “We (Governors of the South East) are also working together to make the South East the ideal destination in terms of investment in education, healthcare among others.
“What we are doing is the right thing to do and we need more people that would support us because the government cannot do everything”.
The Governor emphasized his administrations dedication to Education, citing the allocation of 20% of the 2024 budget to the education sector.
Governor Otti who commended the University’s emphasis on Agriculture, highlighted the need for a functional Higher institution to train youths in Agriculture to ensure food security in the South East zone.
He noted that his government priorities agriculture and has established policies to promote Agricultural training and job creation among youths.
“Agriculture occupies a prime place in our administration.
“We have set up a policy and we are also trying to make sure our people get trained, particularly the young people so that they can not just only train for jobs and manage jobs themselves, but can also work for Multinational cooperations“, Otti said.
Governor Otti welcomed the collaboration with the University as well as it’s proposed take off from the premises of the College of Education Technical Arochukwu, pointing out that the state would explore ways to utilize the college’s vast land and resources.
He directed the Commissioner for Education, Prof Eme Uche Eme, to liaise with the University delegation to discuss the details of the ownership structure and the offer being made, and reiterated that the ultimate goal is to provide better education for the people of the South East region.
“We are encouraged by your decision to domicile the South East University in Àbia and we will do everything to support you“, Otti assured.
In his presentation, the Team Lead, Dr. Venatius Ogueze, explained that the vision behind the South East University is to create a regional institution, similar to those in other parts of the country, to provide quality education and address the specific needs of the South East region.
He cited the prevailing Security and purposeful leadership style of the Governor Otti administration as reasons for considering Abia for the project.
Dr Ogueze said that special consideration would be given to professional courses such as Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Mechanical Engineering while Agricultural students would be offered scholarship.
