Abia State Governor’s Wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, said that it is her passion to ensure that the girl child is protected from all vices to succeed in her chosen area of an enterprise.
The Governor’s wife stated this in a seminar organised by the Society Eye Support Initiative to sensitise students on the dangers of drug abuse and formation of drug free club at St Theresa’s Girls Secondary School, Umuntu Olokoro in Abia state.
She commended Society Eye Support Initiative for its efforts to get illicit drugs out of the reach of the society especially in the hands of our young teenagers.
The Governor’s wife represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Chinwe Onyeukwu said that the administration of Governor Alex Otti is doing everything possible to see that drug abuse is stamp out of the society.
According to her, “we are working tirelessly in collaboration with the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency to put up a place for rehabilitating those already affected by drug addiction in the state” she said.
In her address, the cordinator, SESI, Dr. Ebere Mbamara, explained that society eye support initiative is all about supporting what is good and at the same time help government to weed out bad attitude and vices that were inimical to moral compass of the society through trainings, seminars and sensitization.
In the seminar, Anu Binta Maureen of the NDLEA expressed that drug abuse is very destructive to human health and warn those involved to abstain from the habit.
She frowned at the alarming rate of increase of drug addiction in the society and call on governments to step up efforts to combat it because of its health implications.
In her remarks the Police Public Relations Officer in Abia state, PPRO Maureen Chinaka said that the police will partner the SESI in sensitising the youths.
The police PPRO noted that security is the business of everyone and call for public scale up of information sharing to help police combat drug related crime in the state.
However, Rev. Sister Mary Ifechukwudere of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Congregation thanked the wife of Abia Governor for sponsoring the programme and also donating sanitary pads to the students.
Meanwhile, one of the participants, Miss. Joyce Nkemdirim, who spoke to National Ambassador reveals that the seminar has increased her understanding of the dangers of drug addiction and promised to share the knowledge with her friends and other members of the society.
