Mothers Day: Abia first lady charges women to report instances of abuse

March-past, drama, dancing and cultural display were the renditions as the catholic women faithful in Nigeria joined their counterparts globally to celebrate this year mothers day with the theme “motherhood a call to perform sacred and supreme vocation”.

Addressing women at St. Tansi catholic church Aba, Abia state, the wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti advised mothers to take proper care of themselves, their husbands and the children.

“By doing so, you are fulfilling your sacred duties to God and at the same time playing active role in nation building” she said.

 

Mrs. Otti further stated that the administration of Governor Alex Otti is not relenting in empowering women but also committed toward lifting Abia women out of poverty.

In his sermon, the parish priest Reverend Father Kelechi Anyanwu admonished mothers not to live above their means in this period of economic challenges rather support their husbands financially in providing for the family hence life is not a competition.

In a related development, Mrs. Otti also visited Mater Dei cathedral in Umuahia the state capital where she lectured mothers to model good role for their children to emulate.

She emphasized her passion about women empowerment and her commitment towards giving Abia women the recognition and support they deserve.

According to her, “while we may not put many of our efforts on women empowerment in the media, be assured that there are numerous empowerment initiatives happening while more are underway, aimed at uplifting and empowering women across the state” she said.

Mrs. Otti however, urged the Catholic Women’s Organisation to harness its collective strength to empower women, particularly widows and those facing hardships.

She also appealed to women to report promptly instances of abuse or violence adding that each life lost represents a generation destroyed.

In her remarks, the President, catholic women’s organisation mater dei parish, Professor Roseta Eneje called for a redress on the way women are treated, adding that it is time nations and institutions acknowledge the sacred duties mothers play in nation building.
