Grief-Stricken Fishermen Halt Operations Amidst Tragedy Over NLNG Safety Concerns

Fishermen navigating the Amadi-Ama, Koko Ama, Ozuboko, Marine Base, and Abloma waterways have suspended their fishing activities, expressing heightened concerns for their safety in the creeks after the demise of their colleague, Precious Imabibo. The grieving fishermen, critical of LNLG’s response to the incident, claim that the company neglected safety measures and failed to take responsibility for Precious’ death. Tuboberemi Hamilton, the secretary of the Amadi Ama Fishermen Cooperation, conveyed their dissatisfaction, revealing that the association has collectively decided to curse fishing in light of the tragic loss. Hamilton urged the Rivers State Government to intervene and address their grievances.

Blessing Imabibo, the victim’s mother, voiced her distress, stating that no NLNG representative had visited the family since her son’s passing. She accused the company of focusing solely on dispersing protesters rather than addressing the family’s plight. Mrs. Imabibo emphasized the significant role her son played in supporting her health, given her conditions of asthma, arthritis, and high blood pressure.

Concerned citizens of Ogobolo are now urging the State Government and security agencies to investigate the matter. Diamond Syril, in a statement, called for increased monitoring of NLNG activities on Okirika waterways. Precious Imabibo reportedly drowned on January 20, 2024, following waves generated by an LNLG passenger boat, Confidence 1.
