Abia State Government Kick Off Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 

Abia State Government has shown greater commitment to checkmating the menace of breast cancer among women. Leading at the forefront of creating breast cancer awareness today in a road show across the state capital in Umuahia is the wife of Abia Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti.

 

Briefing journalists at the Ochendo International Conference in Umuahia after the road show tagged “walk away cancer” Mrs. Otti, said that every year, the month of October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness. It is an annual campaign focused on raising awareness about this intricate disease.

She also explained that breast cancer is a complex battle, one that affects our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, while also challenging our healthcare system and carrying a profound emotional and economic burden.

According to her, “the Government of Abia State is dedicated to enhancing access to healthcare services and providing support for cancer patients”

“We are committed to expanding resources for breast cancer awareness programs, research, and treatment,” she said.

The Governor’s wife also urged every woman in Abia State to take proactive measures for their health by seeking regular check-ups and inspiring loved ones to do the same.

 

She advised that regular mammograms and self-examinations at home can save lives by detecting cancer early for effective treatment.

In a lecture series, former secretary of Nigeria Cancer Society, Dr. Mazi Ejike, said that breast cancer is an uncontrollable growth in the cells of the breast and the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide.

 

He said while cancer of the cervix is preventable through the human papillomavirus vaccine, early detection of breast cancer through self-examination, clinical examination and screening is key to the treatment of breast cancer.

Meanwhile, the commissioner for health in Abia state, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo said that the administration of Governor Otti is committed to the health of Abians. That is the reason he is revamping and equipping the health sector so that people can have access to quality health care.
