Judicial Panel Of Inquiry Set For Inaugural Sitting Today

The Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, focused on the retrieval of Abia State Government’s assets and funds, is set to commence its first session today, Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

A release made available to newsmen by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kazie Ukoh said the proceedings will take place at the Old Government House Annex, starting at 9 a.m.

Recall that the Abia State Government on Tuesday,27th June 2023, officially launched a Judicial Panel of Inquiry tasked with the mission of recovering government assets and funds that belong to the state.

The panel, comprising five members, is headed by Hon Justice Ikwuoma Duruoha-Igwe (rtd.) while other members of the panel include Prof Ogwo Ekeoma Ogwo, Prof Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor, and Rev Father Barr Alex Okonkwo.

During the formal inauguration of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry at the Banquet Hall, Government House Umuahia, Governor Otti appealed to the general public for their support in providing any information that could aid the recovery of government properties and funds that were allegedly embezzled during the previous administration.

The Governor highlighted that the establishment of the panel became necessary due to numerous complaints from the public about widespread embezzlement and misuse of government resources by the previous administration.

He emphasized that the current administration encountered challenges in accessing government properties essential for effective governance, including instances of public land being converted to private use.

Governor Otti explained that despite his administration’s intention to focus on governance, the prevailing circumstances necessitated a thorough inquiry into past actions.

The terms of reference for the judicial panel include; receiving and examining complaints and memoranda from individuals and corporate entities regarding the misappropriation or conversion of Government Properties, Funds, and Related Matters.

Making recommendations to the government for appropriate remedial measures or actions.
Investigating the illegal acquisition, occupation, or conversion of government assets and funds, and identifying the responsible parties.

Proposing measures for recovery and suitable sanctions for those found responsible.
Assessing land allocations and revocations in Abia State from May 2015 to May 2023 to determine their propriety.

Reviewing contracts awarded and executed between May 2015 and May 2023 to ensure their conformity with existing laws.
Investigating any other matters related to the terms of reference and offering recommendations based on findings.
