Abia Assembly Service Commission: Lawmakers urge Gov Otti to expedite action; Charge Govt to take urgent steps on plight of Abians

Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti to as a matter of necessity Constitute the Abia State House of Assembly Service Commission as  obtainable in most States of the Federation and as allowed under the 5th alteration of the constitution.
This followed a motion on the floor of the House by the member representing Isiala Ngwa North, Mr Ugochukwu Iheonunekwu and supported by others who argued that doing so will aid the proper running of the State Assembly among others.

The House also entertained another motion  by the member for Bende North state constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe on the need for the State government’s immediate intervention on the incessant erosion menace in Bende North especially in parts of Akoliufu, Amabo, Umuenyere Alayi, Okafia, Onu Ibina, Ezi – Igbere and Amaekpu and Amaokwe Item, among others.

The House resolved that the ministries of Works, Environment and other relevant agencies embark on an on the spot assessment of the areas with the view to proffering solutions, commence palliative measures as well as bring the situation to the knowledge of the federal Ministry of Environment, NDDC and Federal Ecological Office for urgent attention.
Speaking on a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, the Deputy Speaker and member representing Umuahia East State Constituency, Rt.Hon. Okezie Augustine drew the attention of the House to the incessant menace of flooding in Elugwu Nkata Ibeku which has led to the death of some of his constituents in recent times with the most recent being that of a teenager, miss Queen Esther Ukata, the only child of a widow in the community who was washed away by flood in the area last month on her way back from church and called for immediate government intervention.

The House resolved, urging the State government to through its agencies including the ministry of Works move to cushion the effects of the flood, and facilitate immediate permanent solution to the flooding while the State Emergency Management Agency should urgently visit the victim’s family at Elugwu Nkata Ibeku for necessary action.
On a petition on an alleged abuse of office, harassment, intimidation and refusal to pay workers salary brought to the House by some staff against the Deputy General Manager of Abia State Road Traffic Safety Management Agency, Mr Kelechi Uwakwe, the Speaker, Rt.Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa announced the setting up an adhoc committee consisting of Mr Anderson Akaliro of Umuahia North, Mr Kalu Mba of Ohafia South, Mr Lewis Obianyi of Ukwa East, Mr Fyne Ahuama of Osisioma South and Mr Emeka Obioma of Umuahia South to investigate the matter and report back to the House.

The Speaker also announced the Deputy Speaker, Mr Okezie Augustine, Mr Matthias Umeh of Umunneochi state constituency, Mr Iheanacho Nwogu of Osisioma North, Mr Goddy Adiele of Ukwa West and Mr Ucheonye Akachukwu of Aba Central as members of an adhoc committee to investigate and report back to the House on the petition by Owaza Union of Elites against the activities of oil and Gas prospecting companies in Owaza clan with it’s adverse effects to human and their non appropriate social responsibilities to the state and communities.
