Enugu: The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Enugu State Chapter has requested for disability desk in Enugu government house.
The Chariman of the association, Mr Onyebuchi Mba, stated this in Enugu recently in an occasion to mark 2022 International Day of persons with Disabilities (IDPD).
Mba explained that the delay in domesticating the national disability law in Enugu state was not just frustrating but also discouraging the disability community from self-discovery and self reliance.
He called on the Enugu State House of Assembly to consider the global practice in disability matters and domseticate it before the end of the administration.
In the same vein, he commended the state assembly for its efforts on the bill as the bill had gone through pubic hearing.
While commending the state government on his support on their welfare
especially on the employment of over 50 graduates with disability and scholarship opportunities for 18 visually impaired undergraduates.
“We appeal to the state to consider other areas of immediate needs like disability desk in the government house, if created, the disability desk under the governor’s office will serve as a direct link between the public and the government.
“Persons with disability may be considered for appointment to oversee the office, political positions and some good number of us will begin to benefit.
“We equally appeal for the provision of a functional permanent office complex or in alternative an office apartment with the requisite office equipment.
“We also request for mobility that will enable us go about our activities without fear or favour” he appealed.
As a non profit organisation, the Chairman asked for the assistance of the governor to approve annual subvention that would enable them carry out their programmes to avoid always asking for assistance from the public.
The theme for this year’s event is, “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“.
