ENUGU–The All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Princess Ada Ogbu, has expressed concern that despite repeated demands for immediate end to all forms of violence against women, it had remained pervasive.
Princes Ogbu, made the call in a statement to celebrate the 2022 International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women (VAW) and Marking the Start of Global 16 Days of Activism to VAW in Enugu recently.
The APC senatorial candidate stressed the need to end impunity for such acts as part of a comprehensive approach to seeking peace, justice, truth and national reconciliation.
It could be recalled that In her speech at a private interview organized by a woman-centred group in Enugu, Princess Ogbu, decried the rate of the prevalence of gender-based violence in the country, especially violence against women and girls.
She eulogized some grassroots activists, women’s rights defenders and survivor advocates worldwide such as WACOL, Women4Women, Heroine Women Foundation, African Women Lawyers Association etc, and commended them for the work they are doing in the area of violence against women and children.
Princess Ogbu, from the Nara Unataeze Royal family, noted that the upcoming 2023 General Elections has provided a prime opportunity for citizens to contribute towards a more inclusive and sustainable democracy in Nigeria, noting that one key way to do so would be voting massively for credible female candidates.
According to her, “supporting more women in next year’s election and beyond will help to reverse the abysmal levels of female participation and representation in political decision-making processes and in other political spaces at all levels.
She said, “the only way to positively affect women is to elect a woman that can understand and effectively represent them. It is very important for us as a people to ensure that women are placed in a position to serve because that’s what they know how to do best.
She emphasized human capacity development, noting that it is one of the best ways to bring development to the society, supporting and investing in strong, autonomous women’s rights organizations and feminist movements is key to ending violence against women and girls.
