An Expert and Director, Amaudo Integrated Community Mental Health Foundation, the Very Rev Kenneth Nwaubani has attributed over 40% of mental ill health cases across Nigeria to unresolved family issues such as divorce,abuse among others.
Rev Nwaubani,who made this known while featuring in a BCA Radio audience participatory programme “Amaudo Mental Half Hour”, said that the statistics has been proven by valid evidence arising from research by mental health experts.
He called on the Church , the Court, traditional institutions and other bodies saddled with the responsibility of instituting marriages to make couple’s compatibility a key requirement that must be met by couples before uniting them in holy matrimony to reduce the prevalence of family break up in the society.
“Government at all levels and the church should rise up to the challenge by creating an effective mechanism to cushion the harsh effects of the economic reality on ground”, the cleric advised.
The Very Rev Nwaubani while noting that the high cost of living is greatly affecting the rehabilitation programme of the Amaudo Integrated Community Mental Health center, said 20 out of the 66 residents of the center have been certified medically fit and would be discharged and reintegrated with members of their families having undergone skills acquisition training.
He noted that a training session would be conducted for the family members of the rehabilitated residents in order to equip them with the appropriate skills for a seamless and smooth reintegration into the society.
