Speaking during an interview with newsmen at Government House Umuahia, Dr.Nwachukwu, further thanked the state government for making healthcare system accessible and affordable to the populace, adding that it has impacted positively on the lives of the people especially children of under five years and women of child bearing age.
She explained that (SOML) is a performance based assessment program sponsored by the Federal Government in collaboration with the World Bank with an objective to expand access to essential primary health care services for women and children.
While noting the impact of the program on the Abia populace, Nwachukwu said
“SOML has been able to impact positively on the populace as much as possible especially children of under five years and women of child bearing age.
“We have been able to distribute mosquito nets to the communities from house to house, through the local governments and healthcare centres, support the Immunization programmes to make sure that children get fully immunized and equally help in the distribution of Vitamin A. We supported that programme to make sure that children of five years and below get vitamin A supplementation.
“For the mothers, we supported family planning and HIV Counseling and Testing by supervising the healthcare centres and equally making sure that there are test kits available in these health care centres for them to get tested and know their status.
“Generally, there is a decline in maternal and child morality rate. We have made impacts in vaccination coverage,vitamin A supplementation and use of insecticide treated nets among children as well as HIV testing and counseling in women attending ante natal care among others”.
She however,advised mothers to improve their health seeking behaviors as this would reduce the rate of maternal and child mortality in the country.
Dr. Nwachukwu who is also one of the recipients of the Abia state Government award for Frontline workers who dedicated themselves to service during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, thanked the state government for finding her worthy and assured that she will not relent in the service to humanity and fatherland.
